Starlight's Llamas

Llamas are members of the camelid family. The earliest llama ancestors evolved in the Mississippi valley of North America and walked out of the area and across land masses. Those that went north and west evolved into Bactrian and Dromedary camels. Those that walked south evolved into alpacas, guanacos, vicuna and llamas.  Llamas can weigh as much as 400 pounds and stand over 6 feet tall. They live in herds and establish close bonds with one another. Their natural curiosity and willingness to protect themselves and others in their herd make them ideal guard animals for sheep and goats. Unlike other animals that run from danger, llamas move toward it, an action that scares away coyotes and other predators. If that doesn't work their alarm call will. Llamas, named after the Spanish for call, were named for this rarely heard, but distinctive call.

Being in the presence of llamas is like discovering serenity. It is easy to slow down when you are around them. We welcome you to grab a cup of coffee and just enjoy watching the llamas eat and move those 'banana' shaped ears as they listen to you talk. Llamas are rarely outgoing, but if you are still, keep your hands down and move your head forward, they will greet you by nuzzling you nose to nose.

While llamas can be slightly aloof, our Pygmy and dairy goats and our miniature donkey are downright friendly. Each of these animals were rescues and were saved from inadequate living conditions or from becoming a meal. They have brought joy to our family and instigate play among the animals. We know you will love them, too.

No farm is complete without domestic birds, and Starlight Llamas has many free range chickens, guinea fowl, peacocks, and emus. A visit to the emus is like a lesson in evolution, they look part bird and part dinosaur, and their amazing feathers look like fur. A visit to Starlight Llama ends with a peacock feather, and we hope yours will become a treasured memento of your visit.
